A household name in Norway through her appearance on reality show Hver gang vi møtes, performance with John Legend at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert & working with multi-million streaming artists like Madcon & Emma Steinbakken, Norwegian alt-pop artist Rikke releases High Horse – a song about relationship boundaries & the first single from her upcoming album Not Even Air Can Come Between Us Now.
With its upbeat, funk-soul groove, this infectious slice of alt-pop is sure to lift the spirit of many a listener. However, the lyric paints a very different picture as it tells a tale of getting entangled by the disrespectful behaviour of so-called friends & their disregard for others.
Standing up to such energy-draining interactions is something close to Rikke’s heart as she longs to build more balanced relationships in her life. Writing High Horse has helped in that process – like a sort of emotional release as Rikke explains: “Breaking up with friends when there’s an unhealthy dynamic can seem to many as a bit taboo still. For some reason we’re only allowed to break up romantic relationships! Whereas, if it’s platonic & for some reason you’re no longer compatible, the other party can seem shocked when you cut them out of your life, even after explaining why!”.
Born just outside Oslo, Rikke spent part of her early life also in Stockholm, but it was at the age of 6 when her family moved to London that a natural inclination towards expressing herself in English was developed & thus followed on in her songwriting.
On the performance front, Rikke built a reputation as the ‘go-to backing vocalist’ for many established Norwegian artists which led on to her touring throughout Europe & then being handpicked to sing with John Legend at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. However, it was when she joined the house band for Norwegian Idol for 5 seasons & featured in national reality TV show Hver gang vi møtes (which she still appears in), that Rikke became a household name throughout Norway.
With regards to her own music, Rikke reached the semi-finals of the Norwegian Eurovision with her own song & then began releasing music on her Rikkeleaks label. Her music has gone on to enjoy exposure on Norway’s premiere digital station NRK P3 & prestigious Scandinavian music press, as well as garner popularity with audiences in Brazil & beyond. Her musical influences include artists like Björk, Bon Iver, Aurora & Fleetwood Mac (as well as her father’s eclectic record collection) & Rikke has a strong desire to write for the unheard & misunderstood, composing songs alone, on a 100-year-old grand piano in her Oslo apartment.
Having performed at festivals like by:Larm (Norway), Live At Heart & Future Echoes (Sweden), plus iconic venue Upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s (UK) Rikke has shown herself to be a truly accomplished musician & creative on all fronts. Be sure to keep an eye on this rising talent as the journey towards her upcoming album unfolds.
