“They’re definitely a band from Hull” Steve Lamacq, BBC 6Music

Their thunderous drumming & scorched earth guitars will take this band places…Travellers Tunes

Following the success of a string of single releases about young adulthood & growing up too fast, which have received support from BBC Introducing’s Jericho Keys, & for singles O.S.T.M. & Haven’t Got A Prayer also  BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq, the explosive Hull 5-piece indie-rock outfit The Avenues share their highly relatable new single Insomniac – a track about the inability to unplug from the information overload associated with modern life, while not losing touch.

Produced by Embrace keyboardist Mickey Dale at his Bradford based studio The Cellar of Dreams, this guitar led indie gem with its anthemic chorus channels the energy of bands like Interpol, Reverend And The Makers, The Walkmen & alike. Lead vocalist Tom says of the track “Insomniac is exciting to perform live as audiences really pick up on its energy. Lyrically, the track explores the inner conflict between understanding the importance of being politically informed & maintaining your relationships with friends while also recognising the need to escape doom scrolling, social fatigue & burnout at times”.

The Avenues are explosive performers known for their insightful lyrics on relatable issues such as summers spent at work, nostalgia for adolescence & growing up too fast in the tumultuous world around us.

The lineup includes Tom Foston (vocals, rhythm guitar), Ollie Brown (BVs, lead guitar), Reece Harper (synth, extra guitar), Joe Galloway (bass) & Kurt Jackson (drums, BVs). Started by founder members Tom & Joe before lockdown, the band grew to 5 members by pulling in long-time school friends Ollie & Kurt along the way, then University flatmate Reece joined later to complete the lineup.

Their influences span from late 70s punk to 2000s indie wave, including indie rock acts like The Strokes & Kings of Leon through to punk bands like Rancid & The Buzzcocks. When writing, each member brings their own individual musical style to the mix creating something greater than the sum of its parts, then adding Tom’s well-crafted lyrics completes the picture.

The band have a string of sold-out hometown shows already under their belt & are now gaining attention further afield through supporting notable bands like The K’s, The Royston Club & Spector. With a string of gigs to promote Insomniac about to unfold (see below) this highly credible & streetwise band are getting themselves right out there for all to hear. Why not come along – it’s no sleep till Humberside!
