Kaeya / Amalia - artwork

Leeds-based singer-songwriter Kaeya releases Amalia, the first single out on Hull’s Warren Records, & named after their late great-grandmother who immigrated with her ‘abuelo’ (grandfather) from the Galician coastal city of A Coruña in Northern Spain to offer a better & more prosperous life to the family. Recorded with the guiding hand of Hull’s local indie producer Adam Pattrick, the track introduces audiences into the folky dreamland of Kaeya’s rural Latin culture.

Amalia is an ode to heritage & aims to continue their grandmother’s legacy in a world where softer, aching souls often find themselves astray, while trying to hold on to the roots that formed you in an increasingly intolerant society. Kaeya grew up idolising this elderly relative, who talked her ear off in Spanish at every visit, hoping one day to be just as strong as she was. The track is an homage to the sun-drenched streets of home & remembering Amalia just as she was: sharp, strong & beautiful.

Kaeya explains: Amalia is my homage to the woman I spent my whole life being compared to. Often described as dramatic & sometimes stubborn by others, I now accept that comparison, understanding that all these traits made for a person who was rich in life & all its complexities. I now choose to take her memory & thoughts with me as I navigate a life she’ll never get to see.”
