Out this week on 12″ vinyl and digital formats is the Special People EP from Margate musician Dan Lyons. It’s a great introduction to this rising songwriting talent who’s previously better known as the drummer in Fat White Family as well as working with Misty Miller and Phobophobes. The EP’s title track Special People, with its infectious guitar hook, is an energy packed slice of indie-pop which takes a pop at today’s vacuous glitterati and asks where all the genuine talent has gone! There’s also a version of the Lou Reed / Velvet Underground classic Waiting For The Man mixed by Yiğit Bülbül (Whenyoung, King Krule) plus the co-write with Sean Ono Lennon; Gargoyle, while the poignant track lyrically set Dan’s hometown of Margate: Seaside Politics closes the release.
